“The next thing I know, this guy comes stumbling in like some drunk. Except he starts moaning and biting people. I’d seen what an infected person looked like from the news so I wasn’t going to stick around. I got into my van and took off. I offered my coworkers a ride but they all took their own cars.”

“Wait,” Ben looked around. “So these guys aren’t your coworkers?”

“Nope. I picked everyone up on the way outta town. I figured it was the right thing to do, ya know? By the time we were loaded, the streets were crawling with em. That’s when I found Nate. He was out there swinging that sword of his like some kind of night. It was crazy!”

“Nate?”

“That’s me,” a voice in the back said.

Tiffany shrugged. “Oh yeah. I guess you need to be introduced to everyone… well… er… I don’t remember everyone’s names. Why don’t you introduce yourselves? You’re all adults!”

“Chuck,” the obese man sitting on the far side of Ben said.

“I’m Abi,” the girl between them added. She had dyed neon green hair and her arms and breasts appeared to be covered in tattoos.

“I’m Steven. Nice to meet you,” a pompous sounding man directly behind him said, offering to shake his hand. He reeked of cheap booze and his suit was stained with numerous fluids.

“Santos. Dis is Jorge. And Jesus,” said a Hispanic man in the far back, motioning to the two with him.

“I’m Nate; the sword guy.”

“Hey everyone,” Ben said, feeling like was in a classroom or an intervention.

“Staff Sergeant Devon Reilly.” Said the front passenger, shaking his hand. It was hard to judge with him sitting, but Ben assumed he was a full head taller than Devon. His face was covered in acne scarring and his red hair was shaved short. “Glad to have you sir.”

Ben wasn’t sure what it was about the guy, but something was… off. He was polite enough and seemed like he genuinely wanted to help people but… it all seemed so fake. It was almost like everything he said or did was for show.

“Okay people,” Devon started. “We’re plenty far outta the city now. Where do you want to go to ‘hole up’?”

“My parents live in Wyoming. They have fifty acres.” Chuck started. “Maybe there?”

“Why the hell would we go to Wyoming?”

“Uh… my family?” Chuck said louder, thinking he hadn’t heard his reasoning.

“No. Not Wyoming,” Devon said in a ‘that settles that’ voice. “Personally, I think we should stay local and wait for the rest of the Army to show up to kick these flesh-eaters the hell out.”

A couple people cheered the idea but most of them just sat quietly. The idea was good and all but it was the manner in which it was presented. For one, Devon blatantly disregarded Chuck’s idea of Wyoming completely without a second thought. The man was clearly concerned for his family but Devon didn’t seem to care. On top of that, he asked for input and then immediately told them what they were going to do.
